COUN. IREK KUSMIERCZYK, Ward 7, Windsor
Nov 03, 2015
It is ironic that the auditor general debate about accountability and transparency at city hall was not televised. Thankfully, a handful of students and professional journalists stepped into the breach to provide a colourful real-time account on social media.
Nothing captures this more than the image of Dan Gray, a student at the St. Clair College MediaPlex, holding up his arms for four straight hours to video capture the entire debate on his cellphone in order to live stream it via a mobile app called Periscope.
I was equally amazed by the large number of residents who followed the debate on Twitter in real-time and interacted with those in the council chambers.
Kudos to the Windsor Independent and Rose City Politics, who joined reporters from the Windsor Star, CBC, and AM800 to provide a lively account on Twitter.
They managed to effectively communicate the substance and sizzle of a four-hour debate in very short tweets.
These folks improved accountability that night by getting creative in getting the story out.
Where there is a will there is a way.
